I have a confession to make–I’m a smoker and have been for the past 18 years. I want to quit and have tried to kick the habit many times, but find the physical and psychological withdrawal unbearable. I’ll spare you all the gory details, but suffice to say it isn’t pretty.
I’ve tried Zyban and all the nicotine replacement therapies and before any of you suggest hypnosis, please bear in mind that the thought of some stranger poking around in my subconscious does not appeal to me in the least. But I am approaching middle age and those all important heart-attack years, so when I hear about a new treatment for die hard smokers like myself, I get very excited. Enter Champix by Pfizer.
Champix (Chantix in the United States) works by blocking the effect of nicotine on the brain, thereby reducing the urge to smoke. In a statement released to the media today, the makers of Champix, Pfizer Australia claim it can reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms of smokers, but only if said smoker is committed to kicking the habit. Smokers continue to smoke during the first week or two of treatment and then quit whilst taking the remainder of the 12 week course of medication. Hmm sounds suspiciously like ‘Zyban’ to me.
Champix is available only by prescription from your doctor and will be placed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) from 1st January 2008. Do you suppose it is coincidence that Champix is being added to the PBS to coincide with that new year’s resolution to quit smoking?
In regards to Champix, I don’t see anything new here. The onus is still on the smoker to weather the physical and psychological withdrawal and if you can do that, you probably won’t need a prescription medication anyway. One of the many nicotine replacement therapies available without prescription will probably suffice. As I’ve already pointed out, a very similar drug marketed under the name of Zyban was released several years ago. Zyban quietly disappeared from shelves after it failed to live up to all the hype and then there were those reports in the media of some very unpleasant side effects. Personally, I stopped taking Zyban after it kept me awake for 3 days and in case you were wondering–Yes, I was still smoking the whole time.
For years I’ve been telling anyone who would listen that if the government really wanted to curb the incidence of smoking in Australia, they would redirect those precious health dollars into treatment programs, instead of handing the money over to pharmaceutical companies via the PBS.
Millions of dollars are filtered into treatment and rehabilitation programs for drug addicts and alcoholics each year. Why don’t they develop similar treatment programs for smokers? Well, as one clever psychologist/university lecturer once told me, the government has become dependent on the revenue raised by taxes on tobacco products. Another possibility is the initial costs of developing effective treatment programs for smokers would be enormous. However, when you consider the long term savings to our health care system, isn’t the initial outlay worth it?

I tried Zyban 3 times without success, I am in my last week of 12 with Champix right now. I found Champix to work brilliantly after the first week, I simply did not think of smoking as much and I am very much like the author of this article in that I found it hard to give up. Champix seems to be quite different than Zyban, I wanted to smoke more with Zyban but wanted to less with Champix.
One problem I found was that I need to eat first otherwise I feel sick if I take the tablet on an empty stomach.
Over the last three months I have put on 4kg which could be due to me eating a bit more than usual but as I am also exercising more, I am inclined to blame Champix for the weight gain, I will be finished with Champix soon and hopefully will get back to normal and lose the weight.
Psychologically, I had no mental health problems when starting Champix (a bout of depression in the past), but now feel quite down at times, this has only happened in the last few weeks and I have had family issues to deal with so I am not sure if Champix is to blame in this area, it probably doesn’t help, but I suspect that because I can’t deal with conflicts by going away and having a cigarette to calm down, the stress is coming out a different way (yelling at the kids), I have to learn a better way of dealing with it.
Overall I am happy with the results of taking Champix, I intend to stay smokefree forever now. I am not happy with the weight gain or the blues but I am hoping that it will all go back to normal (without the smoking) in the weeks after I finish the Champix.
Champix alone is not the answer, to quit for good, support is needed and also learning new ways of coping with issues that arise (Champix provides a website with very good information and support- http://www.mytimetoquit.com.au/ ).
I would definitely NOT recommend this medication to anyone with a mental illness.

I am in week 7 of the 12-week program and have been a non-smoker since Good Friday. Having smoked for 35 yrs and tried to give up using every program that has come on to the market, I am delighted that Champix has worked for me.
Yes, it does require willpower – the medication takes away the overwhelming urge to smoke but un-learning bad habits and staying focussed on the reasons WHY I want to be a non-smoker, have been difficult.
There are side effects also. It is not recommended to take a tablet without food, esp in the morning. In fact it has worsened over the past week to the point I am only taking one, rather than two tablets per day. The other side effect is constant flatulence for which the doctor has recommended peppermint capsules.
Psychologically, I don’t believe there’ve been any changes – in fact I feel calmer in stressful situations (and there have been some significant stressors in my workplace recently). My dreams are more vivid but these are ordinary-type dreams… certainly nothing like the hallucinations experienced with Zyban.
The website is an OK support tool (even though it’s inaccessible today) – the diary assisted with recording my thoughts, the ups & downs, etc.

I am in week 5 of Champix and my quit day was April 9th. I have never taken Zyban because I am on Antidepressant Zoloft (made by same company as Champix ) and it was not recommended to mix the two. Champix, however, can be taken safely with Antidepressants. I am very happy with Champix as I have been a smoker for 30 years and finally WANTED to quit. The nausea in the morning is quite unpleasant but no gain without pain !! I would recommend it to anyone that is seriously wanting to give up the dreaded nicotine. It costs $7.82 per week for 12 weeks as opposed to my $65.00 on cigarettes. Good Luck to all

I am a woman of 65 who has tried everything to try and stop smoking many many times. I want everyone to know that taking Champix has been the best. I have not had a cigarette for 7 days and I have done it so very easy. I have not even been craving sweets. I reccomend Champix to anyone wanting to stop smoking. You still need a bit of willpower. I have not been sick or depressed just happy like I usually am, no change

I’ve been on Champix for about 10 days. Haven’t given up smoking completely, but have dropped from 25 a day to 2, and am working on getting those last 2 out. My only comment is that it would be beneficial if there was some sort of online support (website still down) or assistance.

It’s nice to know that it wasn’t only me unable to access the mttq website. Thought it might have been a test for week three. No sms and no website. HOW STRONG ARE YOU? Would rather run up and down the stairs again. I find the nausea a bit of a problem. My husband wakes me up at 0600 and I take it then , roll over and go back to sleep for a couple of hours. I can do that as we have no children anymore and I work late shift at the local nursing home and don’t finish till midnight. Take the evening one at supper break and feel queasy for the rest of the shift. Doesn’t seem to make a difference if taken with or withoutfood. Anyway after smoking for years(over 30) haven’t smoked since day 10 and feeling very proud of myself. Have found it quite easy.

Hi All
I quit with Champix on April Fools day seemed appropiate as I have had lung cancer and three bypasses. I just could not stop
smoking after almost 50 years of 35 smokes a day. I am 63 years old
I have not smoked since day 6 of taking Champix, had no side effects and am Very proud now to say I am and will always be a none smoker. I found it best to take this tablet after you have eaten. I never thought this tablet would work as I reeally did not
wish to stop smoking. BUT it sure has. Anybody who doubts hang in there even if you are a little sick it is worth it.
I have been using the mytime to quit website, and am annoyed that it is now unavailable as it has all my diaries on it.
You are all wonderful for starting on this journey. Good luck
it feels great to breath again

i did suffer side effects such as headaches and ahve noticed that i do seem to be a lot more anxious than before but wonder if that is champix or the fact that for 30 years i walked this earth my emotions dulled by nicotine so am now just starting to feel things normally .

I have tried every “Quit Smoking” product known to man several times – this tells you that I’m desperate.
I have never stopped for more than a few days and have always had cravings & major withdrawal symptoms.
Champix is making it easy because I’m NOT trying to “kill” anyone who gets within 3 feet of me, I’m NOT bouncing of the walls & I’m NOT wanting to smoke. It helps cut out the cravings & the withdrawall symptoms.
I’m in the 3rd week of Champix & stopped smoking on day 9.
I DON”T feel like smoking – in fact can’t stand the smell.
I DO have just about every minor side affect on the list. The worst being nausea
(couldn’t be worse) & debilitating headaches.
Why continue?
I’d rather FEEL like I’m dieing for a few weeks than actually die for real – I
watched my best friend die of lung cancer last year

Hi there, was really interesting to read all of the above comments. Is is so awful that we put ourselves through this agony to give up the ‘weed’ to avoid the future agony of dying from the ‘weed’ but its gotta be done…..!. I recently gave up smoking too (a month ago) after smoking 20 + a day for nearly 25 years. The smoking ban in public places here in the UK has really helped to avoid environments where people are smoking. I used Alan Carrs book rather than popping pills as it was useful to see the ‘ciggies’ for exactly what they were. I craved the first day and snapped at my partner once or twice for a few days but havent wanted to smoke at all since and actually am now enjoying being smoke free and relaxed. Keep strong everyone – one day smoking cigarettes will be as rare as ‘Hens teeth’ and we will all wonder why anyone ever smoked in the first place.

I went through 12 weeks with Champix and didn’t NEED to smoke, but stupidly continued to have one every now and then with friends that smoked (just for the social aspect). After finishing with the pills, I thought I had my smoking under control but have increased slowly to almost back to what I used to smoke in the first place. I started reading Alan Carr’s book and found it very useful, but I am going to repeat my Champix treatment AND read the rest of the book to finally become a non smoker again.
I urge everyone to do your best to quit but don’t beat yourself up or give up trying if you fail, and if you do stop, you have to remember that it only takes one cigarette to start all over again, my advice is to never think that one won’t hurt because it will.
Good luck everyone, stick to it.

Champix 2nd round. I am now 10 days without a cigarette and I feel like this time I’ve done it. While it would be so easy to give in and just have one, I have fought off the urge (not craving) and a few minutes later I have forgotten all about it.
It also helps to temporarily avoid those people you would normally smoke with or because of, eg arguing with someone and turning to smokes for comfort or having a drink and smoking.
I think the best thing once stopping is to instill into yourself the FEAR of ‘just one’ cigarette, try to make it a competition with yourself getting through one more day, soon the days will add up, rejoice in each day you add to your smokefree life and never become complacent, always fear that “just one”.
Staying strong,
Michelle
