If you don’t see your special guy as often as you would like, consider working out together. In addition to increased together time, research has found that people are 90 percent more likely to adhere to their exercise routine when they are doing it as a pair. It’s safer to work out with a buddy, especially for things like swimming or lifting weights. You can support and encourage each other as you head out for a hike or jog around the local track.
For couples who want to work out together but are unsure of what to do, these suggestions should help you get started:
For Fans of the Gym: An Alternating Box Jump
If you both love going to the gym to work out, the alternating box jump is a fun and effective exercise you can do together. To do the move, stand facing each other and put a sturdy box (around 10 inches square or so) on the floor between you. Then, take turns jumping onto the box and off again while maintaining a squat position. When you land on the ground, your guy should then take a turn jumping up. If you need help with balance, you can hold hands and encourage each other along the way. Try to jump around 20 times each, and if you want to up the ante a bit, strap some light dumbbells onto your wrists. Doing this exercise with your partner will make sure that you are maintaining a good form, and you can cheer each other on as you get tired.
For ‘Classy’ Couples: Sign up for Some Sessions
A fantastic way to work out with your man is to sign up for some type of exercise class together. There are dozens of options you can try, so you should be able to find something that you will both enjoy. For example, if you both love dancing, you might find a salsa or ballroom dancing class at your local community center. Other suggestions include an indoor rock climbing class, ice skating or yoga for couples.
For Swimmers: Some Time in the Pool
Sure, you can both head to the local pool and swim laps together, but how about giving some other water-based activities a try? For example, if you have a pool in your backyard, you can install a volleyball net that will allow you to have a friendly-yet-competitive game of while getting a great workout. In The Swim sells a great cross-pool volleyball game that easily attaches to the sides of the pool and provides hours of fun for couples. When you are done playing, you can easily remove the net and then finish up your time in the water with a race or two across the water.
For Outdoors Lovers: You Guessed It – Head Outside
Put on your walking, running or hiking shoes and head out into the great outdoors. If you have scenic hiking trails nearby, go on a two-mile hike together. Or, take your dog for a brisk walk around your neighborhood every evening. If the weather is on the cold side, you can also go out cross-country skiing or strap on some snowshoes and brave the cold together.
