Want to know what Julia Gillard has been up to since she was unceremoniously dumped as Prime Minister? Six days before the Federal Election on September 7th, Ms Gillard, a confirmed atheist, was photographed with church elders from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons) in Melbourne.
Julia Gillard was the guest of honour at a private event held at Melbourne’s Wyndham Mormon chapel on 1st September 2013, where she was presented with a comprehensive family history study prepared for her by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to promote the Mormons’ family history website www.familysearch.org
The Church will also present a copy of Julia Gillard’s ancestral data, which includes British, Welsh, and Scottish heritage, to the National Library of Australia.
In a statement which is sure to make many in Australia’s secular community hurl, Church Elder Robert J. Dudfield said “We regard today’s presentation as our gift to the nation.”
This is not the first time the Mormons have used the genealogy arm of the church to attract the support of high profile politicians. The Latter-day Saints have also provided family histories to Prime Ministers Kevin Rudd and John Howard, and U.S. Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush.
In a press release the Mormons claim this was the first major event attended by the former Prime Minister following the change in leadership of the Australian Labor Party on 26 June 2013.
