Research shows that in Australia women retire with 40% less super than men. The reasons for this include the gender pay gap, which currently stands at 18%, and the time taken out of the workforce by women to raise children.

Unfortunately for us, the research also shows that women retire earlier and live longer than men. So as women we all need to be in a much stronger financial position if we want to be comfortable later life.

In response to the precarious financial position many women find themselves in, dozens of programs have sprung up over the past couple of years to help women to make the most of their money.

The 12 week Super Woman Money Program was designed by VicSuper to educate women about their finances, take better control of their money and help improve their lifestyle now and in the future.

Now in it’s second year, participation in the Super Woman Money Program is FREE and registration is open to all women across Australia.

The program includes weekly emails with an achievable ‘step’ to towards becoming a Super Woman with money and a dedicated website with an ‘Ask the Expert’ section where women can post questions and receive answers from financial planners. Women can also access 300 Ways to Save Money, a list of practical tips for women who want to take control of their finances.

For women in Victoria, the program also offers 4 events in the Melbourne CBD:

  • April 10: Money Bootcamp – Catherine Robson
How to save fast & build your own spending plan
    Time: 5.45pm – 7.45pm, Melbourne CBD
  • May 1: Super for every Super Woman – Katrina McPhee
    Super planning for women
    Location: Melbourne CBD
  • May 22: What women want – Nicole Heales
    Planning your (female) finances
    Time: 5.45pm – 7.45pm, Melbourne CBD
  • June 12: Girls just wanna have funds – Sarah Riegelhuth
    Investment strategies for women
    Time: 5.45pm – 7.45pm, Melbourne CBD

Barbara Norris, the Chair of VicSuper says “Research shows that of all retired households, single women are the most likely to be dependent on the on the full Age Pension for their income. That’s just under $730 per fortnight (2012). It’s clear that the more we can do to assist women to overcome the financial issues associated with lower wages and time out of the workforce, the better off we’ll be as a society.”

The next Super Woman Money Program kicks off on International Women’s Day, March 8th 2013.
