Marketing a business online is very crucial these days and here are five simple steps from Mel McGee, founder of SupperMummy.com, to help you with that.

Marketing online versus traditional print media is terrific because it means you can measure the effectiveness of your advertising and your campaigns, meaning you can measure the return on your investment in a way you just can’t with a traditional print advertisement.

So here are my five steps on how to successfully market your business online.

Step 1: Get a Website
If you’re online, you’re obviously going to need a website. So make sure your website is keyword rich, meaning look up on Google for words that are associated with your business. See if people are actually looking and what words they are using to look for your type of industry, for your type of business. You want to be using these keywords throughout your site so that you can show up as high as possible on the Google rankings. If you want some more information on this, then you need to invest in some search engine optimisation.

Step 2: Domain Name
Is to look at getting a domain name which actually describes what your business does, rather than your business name, or as well as your business name does. So for example, take those keywords we looked at in Step 1 and choose a domain name that involves a lot of those keywords, or one or two of those keywords. Again, to help you show up higher on Google rankings. Also, get your business listed on Google Maps. Again, this is for free.

Step 3: Social Media
Use social media. Why? Because it’s free, you can get yourself an account on Twitter and a Facebook page right now for free to advertise your business and to connect with other people in your industry and communicate with potential clients.

Step 4: Video
Use video. Again, you can sign up for a YouTube or a Videojug account for free. By using just a simple webcam or your smartphone camera, or if you have the right equipment then go ahead and use that. But use some simple video to demonstrate your products, or perhaps give some advice about what your business can do to help other people.

Step 5: Email Marketing
Get involved with some email marketing. Now, this is different to other types of marketing because it’s what we call ‘permission marketing’ which means people are actually giving you permission to contact them via email by signing up on your website. You can find out about email marketing from companies such as, awebber.com or constantcontact.com and have an account with them, so you can do some email marketing and follow up with potential clients, keep in touch with regular customers with regular promotions and newsletters.

So those are my five steps on how to successful market your business online.
