Influencing your laundry

For most people doing the laundry is a painful, yet necessary chore, especially in winter. Once a forgotten space, more attention is now being paid to make the laundry a stylish and functional room in the home. With careful thought and the right products doing laundry can become a more enjoyable task.

Here, some of Hills’ favourite interior influencers give their top tips for loving your laundry:

Hills Autolift Laundry Hamper

Jen Bishop owner and publisher of design and renovation bible Interiors Addict (@interiorsaddict), says “I hate laundry, I won’t lie. My best tip is to do your folding in front of the TV so it seems like less of a chore.”

“Use the Hills auto lift hamper to save your back when bending over to empty dirty laundry. It’s also one of the best looking laundry hampers I’ve seen.”

Part basket, part gadget, this clever hamper (RRP $39.00) auto lifts your laundry up so you don’t have to break your back to reach the bottom of its 99 litre storage space. Its subtle grey fabric not only looks great, but also contains Hills Fresh technology, which fights bacteria and odours.

Home organisation experts and stylists Nadia Yelland & Caroline Owler from Edited Interiors (@editedinteriors) confess; “Even for those of us that love organising, it can be quite a task to stay on top of household laundry, especially during winter. If your houses are anything like ours, getting clothes, sheets and towels to dry during winter can be a constant battle.”

Hills Foldable Bamboo Laundry Basket

“When the laundry hamper is overflowing, the quickest and easiest way to stay organised is to use a separate basket or tub for each type of wash you do. We suggest using individual baskets for light dark and coloured clothing and another for sheets and towels.

“The new Hills collapsible bamboo laundry baskets are the perfect basket for this method. They look fabulous, they’re durable and when not in use can be folded down for easy storage.”

Available in black, natural and smoke tones, this heavy duty waterproof laundry basket (RRP $29.00) provides 35 litres of space and can hold an 8kg load of washing.

Stylist Liz Amaya (@liz.amaya.style) says adequate storage in a laundry is essential. “In my laundry I have overhead storage cupboards for all those items you don’t want to display, she says. “I also have beautiful, hardwood floating shelves for easy accessibility and to add decor and plants. Laundries don’t need to look clinical or boring; they can be both functional and stylish spaces.”

“At the moment I am loving the Hills winged airer,” Liz continued. “As a busy mum of four I am always washing. Sometimes the weather isn’t so kind, so I need my laundry items to be both easy and functional.”

Designed for those who need to dry large loads of laundry, the winged airer (RRP $49.95) offers 18 metres of hanging space and a rail hanger for delicates. “I can fit such a large load on the airer and move it around with ease,” says Liz. “It folds completely flat and stores perfectly next to my washing machine. Winning!”

Handling up to 12kg of laundry, the winged airer combines lightweight aluminium and matte black steel to create a versatile, contemporary look, paired with strength and durability.
