Our homes should be a place where we’re comfortable, away from the stresses of life outside. But most of us are living with some real nasties – dust mites that love our carpets as much as we do, mould spores that enjoy a nice warm shower too, plus a plethora of other unseen irritants.

If you and your family suffer from allergies, your home could be a potential house of horrors. So how are you going to keep allergies out of your home? It can be as easy as doing implementing some smart cleaning routines, or even changing furniture – many furniture retailers such as Latex Mattress now stock specialist solutions for combating allergens. Whatever lengths you go to, it’ll be worth it to live life without sneezing, wheezing and itching!

Clean your bedding

It’s a good idea to wash your sheets and pillowcases in hot water about twice a week. You should also wash blankets once a week. This will kill dust mites and reduces their food source (dead skin). Consider a latex mattress as these are dust mite resistant their latex construction doesn’t allow for a build up of dead skin. They carry the Asthma Council of Australia Sensitive Choice certification, so you know it’s an ideal choice for those who are extra sensitive! Use allergen-proof covers and pillowcases. Avoid wool blankets and anything that attracts mould, like foam or rubber pillows and mattresses.

Use the right vacuum cleaner

It’s highly recommended that those suffering from allergies use a HEPA-filter vacuum (High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance). These special filters stop things like dust mites, particles and allergens being released into the air via your vacuum’s air filter outlet. Vacuum three times a week if you have carpets or rugs. And don’t just vacuum the floor – vacuum your upholstery and beds once a week. Mop with hot soapy water if you have tiles or wood flooring.

Minimise moisture in the bathroom

Mould is an issue in many bathrooms. The less moisture, the less chance mould will grow. Use exhaust fans and open windows to reduce condensation, and wipe dry the shower and sink after use. Wash shower curtains once a month or purchase some that contain antifungal agents. You’ll need mould-killer to kill existing mould. To prevent mould growth, use soap, water and a brush to scrub surfaces that mould likes to live on. Be mindful of the fact that mould can lurk in your toothbrush holder, and remember to wash your towels regularly with hot water!

Be pet savvy!

As much as it pains us to do so, you may have to keep pets outside as much as possible if your family suffers from allergies. Our furry friends bring allergens into the home, so unless you’re willing to give them a bath every other day, you’ll have to limit their time indoors.

What’s outside, stays outside

Keep windows and doors closed if you can to avoid outdoor allergens getting into your home. If you’ve been outside, remove clothing as soon as you get in, as pollen and other allergens are likely to be embedded in your clothes. If your clothes aren’t being washed straight away, place them in a lidded laundry basket.

Allergy-proofing your home takes time and effort, but once you get into a routine, you’ll find it a lot easier to deal with. The best thing is that you won’t have to live with the stress of allergies anymore – it’s time to claim back your home!
