As another cigarette price increase of 12.5% will take effect from Tuesday 1st September 2015, the Cancer Institute NSW is urging smokers to take the opportunity to butt-out for good and save thousands of dollars every year.

“With the Federal Government’s latest tax increase on tobacco, a pack-a-day smoker will save around $7000 each year if they give up the deadly habit,” Cancer Institute NSW Manager of Cancer Prevention Anita Dessaix said.

“Quitting smoking is by far the best thing a person can do for their health and if that’s not enough incentive, thinking about how to spend all that extra cash is a great motivator.”

Ever year in NSW, about 46,000 hospitalisations and 5,500 deaths are attributed to smoking¹.

Since the first of a series of tobacco tax increases in 2013, there has been a 17 per cent rise in the number of NSW smokers who have tried or thought about quitting and three-quarters of recent quitters attributed their decision to quit to the increasing price of cigarettes².

To find out exactly how much you can save by quitting, icanquit.com.au has an online savings calculator that shows every dollar and cent that can be saved by quitting smoking.
