As small businesses tighten their belts for the predicted economic recession, according to Brand Management expert and Invigorate Managing Director Tess Sanders Lazarus (pictured), marketing is an essential survival tool.

While 83 per cent of small businesses in a recent survey consider planning for an economic recession important, only 44 per cent actually follow through with a business plan.

One major bank suggested businesses that have flexibility with surplus cash should invest in growth opportunities offering a return.

Ms Sanders Lazarus said developing a comprehensive marketing strategy is imperative for businesses to improve their profile in the market space.

“Companies must have a more refined marketing effort to maximize return and gain momentum to carry them through tough times,” she said.

According to Ms Sanders Lazarus, marketing is little understood, with many business managers who are time poor, panicking and wasting money on ‘gunshot marketing’.

However, a strategic and comprehensive brand management plan is a key forecasting tool and will boost business by building stronger relationships with existing clients and help attract new ones.

“Invigorate uses marketing, media and design expertise to undertake a brand audit, offer an analysis and then develop and implement a strategic plan.

“Developing a strategy at a core level will help alleviate a significant amount of stress on businesses owners by providing a more even growth,” she said.
