The differences between FTP & Cloud

The File Transfer Protocol, also known as FTP, is an outdated concept that is used by many companies who aren’t ready to migrate to the next generation of storage technologies – the cloud.

1. What’s a Cloud?

Cloud computing is a general term for a variety of services which offer a virtual storage through Internet or software applications. These services can be accessed through a unique client or a web browser. This way, clients have the opportunity to access each and every stored file on the cloud without having it on their computers.

2. What’s an FTP?

As the internet became more and more popular, FTP had to improve, and the alternative FTPS based on secure protocol was created. It provided bigger security benefits, but it compromised both speed and efficiency.

Setting Up FTP & Cloud Storage

To set up an FTP server you need a highly qualified technician and a trained team to use it. Training a team can often be an exhausting process. To set up a server you will be required to:

1. Purchase a server
2. Login to the admin’s panel
3. Create account for each and every user
4. Install the software on every computer

The cloud services are extremely easy to use and they only require a single registration. You won’t be required to deal with servers, technicians, workers and training sessions. The technical work on the servers is done by the cloud service provider and all you have to do is learn the few buttons on the user-friendly interface provided by the company. So, things that you will need to set it up include:

5. Registration to the cloud service provider’s website
6. Activation of the account
7. Following simple instructions

Sharing Files

If an individual makes a change on a single file, he will be required to replace it on the FTP server. Imagine a small team collaborating on a project and how they must exchange numerous files through the system. If you are still asking what the difference between ftp and cloud storage is then read the following information about sharing files and you will get a better understanding:

FTP

8. Activate the FTP software
9. Type in url, port, password & username for your account
10. Wait to connect
11. Choose the files you wish to share
12. Upload each file
13. Spread the word to your team members or family to log in and download the information.

Cloud

14. Select desired files & folders.
15. Upload in minutes
16. Generate and share a link for download.

It only requires a few clicks to upload and share a file through a cloud service. All people who have the link will be able to access the file and all changes made on it will be synced between the users.

Sharing Files For The Public

In order to share files with clients or other companies through an FTP server, you will need to be careful when setting up the permissions or the files might be exposed to a risk. Most probably you will need the help of a skilled technician, which will cost you extra money. Moreover, you will be required to explain the process of using an FTP server to your client.

With the cloud services, things are far different, better and faster. All you have to do is choose the uploaded file and give “Can View Only” permissions.

Conclusion

We hope that this article made you understand the differences between FTP server and the Cloud services. As you can see for yourself, clouds are far better when it comes to efficiency, speed, reliability, and security.

This is why many businesses today choose to move on to the cloud services. Store information securely with no limitations!
