fotolia_65341521_xsIncreasing your floor space and making your home feel bigger doesn’t have to be an expensive exercise. You don’t even need to knock down and rebuild, or bring in any renovators. There are ways to make any home feel roomier, even on a budget! Here are six simple tricks to help increase the space of your home.

1. Clean the clutter

A house that has every available space filled is going to seem much smaller than it really is. Get rid of those items you never use and place those you can’t bear to part with in storage. That way you can always access them if need be, while getting plenty of space back. Somewhere like Fort Knox Storage in Australia also provides boxes and packing materials that make it easy to shift these items into a storage unit.

2. Don’t push the furniture against the wall

While it seems as though maximising the floor space would make the room look bigger, it can actually work against you. A little space between furnishings, as well as between the furniture and the wall, makes it look as though you have much more room to play with. Try it out with a chair in your lounge room and you’ll see how much difference it makes.

3. Choose your colour scheme carefully

Dark colours absorb light, so they tend to close a room in and make it feel smaller. This applies to the walls, ceilings, hallways and décor. To make a room feel bigger, try sticking to lighter colours, such as white, cream, yellow or grey. These hues reflect the light much better and create the illusion of more space!

4. Use the same flooring

If the living space in your home feels a little cramped, have a look at the flooring. In homes that get some natural light, dark flooring paired with lighter coloured walls can open the space up. Carrying the same flooring type through the living, dining and kitchen areas (where these rooms adjoin) ties each room together. You’ll be surprised how it can instantly make the space feel bigger.

5. Skip the oversize window treatments

While curtains and ruffles might have been popular once, more and more homes are switching to slimline blinds. It’s easy to see why — they are easy to install, can often be bought off the rack and take up much less space than traditional curtains. If space is at a premium, a simplistic window treatment is certainly the better option.

6. Utilise multi-function pieces

Look for clever furniture and storage options that can perform double duty around the home. Lots of bed models now come with drawers, making it easier to store bits and pieces out of the way. Blanket boxes and ottomans are great feature pieces for bedrooms or living rooms, also giving you somewhere to store linen.

A few tricks of the eye can work wonders when trying to make your house feel and look bigger. With the right furnishings and some simple style adjustments, you’ll love how spacious your home will feel.
