Deep Cleaning Tips: How to Keep Your Home Tidy and Prevent Pests

Every now and again, it’s a good idea to don your rubber gloves and give your home a thorough clean. Even if you’re diligent with tidying, your home can get dirty and dusty. Deep cleaning can save you time and effort in the long-run and reduce your risk of health problems. It’s also an effective means of lowering the chances of a pest infestation.

Deep cleaning tips

Before you start cleaning, set aside a day or a weekend to get your chores done. Rope in family and friends to help out and make the process more enjoyable. Prepare all your cleaning products and get your equipment ready.

Start by decluttering each room. You can’t tidy and clean around boxes or clothes lying on the floor. If you have a lot of stuff lying around, create piles. Throw away anything that it is broken or damaged, and put things you no longer want or need in a bag for charity. Once your floors are clear and your shelves free from odd bits and bobs, you can start cleaning.

Vacuum from top to bottom, and give kitchen surfaces and your bathroom suite a good scrub. Dust down your furniture and clean the windows.

Keeping your home tidy and free from pests

Pests are a common problem. Sometimes, they are lured in by open bins or holes in walls.

Look out for signs of pest infestation. Examples include droppings, scratching or scuttling noises, and holes in wooden beams or furniture. If you think you may have rats, termites, or mice, contact pest control experts. There are techniques you can try yourself at home, but it’s usually much more effective to call in the professionals.

Once you’ve got rid of pests, keep on top of tidying and cleaning. If you spend a couple of hours tidying twice a week, this will save you time and ensure your house always looking fresh and clean. Make sure you take the garbage out on a regular basis and keep your rubbish bins firmly closed. If you notice any holes in the walls or skirting boards, patch them up.

If you struggle to keep your home organised, it may be worth looking into storage solutions. Do you have kids? Are there toys everywhere? Or are you guilty of draping clothes over a chair at the end of the day or hoarding things you don’t need? If so, investing in some new storage units, tubs or drawers could help to make tidying much easier. Throw children’s toys into a large tub at the end of the day and pull out drawers from your wardrobe to store your clothes.

It’s essential to keep your home clean and tidy to keep unwanted visitors at bay and reduce the risk of health problems. Set time aside to tackle the cleaning, and try and keep on top of tidying throughout the week. If you think you may have pests, address the problem as quickly as possible. The longer you leave it, the worse it may become. Call in the experts and you’ll have a clean, pest-free home in no time at all.
