Stay at Home Mothers worth a Six Figure Salary

According to Salary.com’s “10th Annual Mom’s Salary Survey” the time mothers spend performing “job functions” in the home, would equate to an annual salary of US$117,856 for a Stay-at-Home Mum. While working mothers would earn US$71,860 above their regular salary for their mum duties.

Now in it’s 10th year, Salary.com’s “Mom Salary Survey” benchmarked a fair salary for mother’s work by considering the market value for the most common jobs and tasks performed by mothers in the home. However, like most jobs, mum’s salary took a hit during the Global Financial Crisis and this year’s salaries are down 4 percent and 6 percent, respectively, from the 2009 calculations of US$122,732 and US$76,184.

In this year’s Mom Salary Survey, more than 28,000 mothers in the US and Canada quantified their hours worked for a typical week. Their different responsibilities were then weighted to determine mum’s overall total compensation.  The job titles that best matched a mum’s definition of her work in both countries are: laundry machine operator, janitor, van driver, computer operator, housekeeper, day care center teacher, cook, chief executive officer, psychologist, and facilities manager. The salary benchmarks for these jobs are based on salaries for a small company, as company size is a key factor that affects pay.

According to the Salary.com survey, the working mum puts in more than 96 hours a week when you combine her full-time job, mum hours, and mum overtime — an increase of four hours from last year.

This year’s survey shows that mum is spending more time preparing meals, making sure the home stays in good repair, and shuttling the family to activities. Mums continue to work longer hours, because they outsource less and handle increasingly more of the workload themselves. Overtime remains a primary driver of mum’s six-figure salary. This year, the stay-at-home mum’s overtime averaged 59 hours in a 99-hour “work week.”
