According to a new survey released in the lead up to Valentines Day, Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta were voted as the favourite on-screen couple in cinematic history.  The top ten was based on a survey of 3,000 people in the United Kingdom and includes two partnerships which are not on-screen lovers, but are no less memorable. Look at the list and see if you agree with the choices.

Top Ten On-Screen Partnerships

  1. Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta – Grease
  2. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers – Fred and Ginger
  3. Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey – Dirty Dancing
  4. James Bond and Miss Money Penny – James Bond
  5. Julia Roberts and Richard Gere – Pretty Woman
  6. Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio – Titanic
  7. Al Pacino and Robert de Niro – Heat
  8. Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable – Gone With the Wind
  9. Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon – Thelma and Louise
  10. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor – Cleopatra

Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) from Titanic would have received my vote for the number one on-screen partnership in cinematic history.  I’ve watched this movie a dozen times and the on-screen chemistry between Winslet and DiCaprio still makes my heart flutter, not to mention my eyes weep when Jack (Leo) goes down with the ship.

I’m also partial to Patrick Swayze and what’s her name in Dirty Dancing.  Got to love a straight man who can dance!

It’s a very ‘romantic’ list but isn’t it. It neglects plenty of other genres – famous ones like Gibson and Glover in Lethal Weapon and Nolte and Murphy in 48 Hours. The results would depend alot on the gender of those voting. Even worse though, it leaves out the best partnership romance of our time: Romancing the Stone.

Yes, Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner were great together in Romancing the Stone.

They must have asked men to participate in the survey too, otherwise Pacino and De Niro wouldn’t be in the top 10 and neither would ‘James Bond and Miss Money Penny’. These are choices women wouldn’t usually think about when asked about their favourite on-screen partnership.
