Young Attractive Mixed Race Couple Sharing Christmas or Valentines Day Gift in the Park.We don’t want to get your hopes up but it is estimated that up to 2 million Australians will receive a big surprise this Friday when they receive an unexpected gift from a secret admirer or loved one.

Love will be in the air this Valentine’s Day with almost 5 million Australians planning to give a gift this year and 3 million expecting to receive one. This leaves up to 2 million Australians who are in for a big surprise on February 14, according to a nationwide survey conducted for Target Australia.

The survey, part of Target’s ‘Love Is…’ campaign, found that Gen Y are the most positive about Valentine’s Day, with 21% saying they love to be romantic on the day compared to just 13% of Baby Boomers.

With Gen Y more likely to give or receive a gift (49%), than Gen X (36%) and the Baby Boomers (28%), we have to conclude that the younger you are, the more likely you are to receive one of those 2 million ‘unexpected gifts’ on Valentine’s Day.

Of those who are planning to buy a gift for Valentine’s Day, the average planned spend is $74, with men planning to spend more than women.

Top 5 purchases for Valentine’s Day 2014:

  1. Dining Out (53%)
  2. Chocolates (43%)
  3. Flowers (38%)
  4. Perfume or Aftershave (25%)
  5. Jewellery (20%)

Continuing the Valentine’s Day habits of those surveyed, 23% of women are planning to wear sexy underwear on Valentine’s Day and ‘spooning’ is commonplace for romantic Australians. While it is more common in new relationships with 99% of those in relationships less than two years cuddling this way, overall 84% cuddle their partner this way.

Relationship Expert Dr. Nikki Goldstein says “While Valentine’s Day provides the perfect
opportunity to get steamy it doesn’t have to feel pressurised. What is important is that you put
some thought into what will get your partner going.”
