The Salvation Army launched its National 2010 Red Shield Appeal today at luncheon in Sydney. More than 500 of Sydney’s business leaders attended the event where Gail Kelly, Chief Executive Officer of The Westpac Group, gave the keynote address.

The national target for the Red Shield Appeal 2010, which includes a business appeal and direct mail campaign, is $75 million. This year, the annual Salvation Army doorknock will take place on the weekend 29th – 30th May.

Salvation Army Appeals Director, Major Jeff Winterburn said: “Although things seem to have improved economically for many Australians, for those we assist – both in the cities and the bush – the struggle continues.”

“The most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of our community are not only the first to be impacted by an economic downturn, but often the last to recover from its added impacts. We need to reach our Appeal goals if we are to maintain our vital social programs in the year ahead, including providing crisis accommodation, support for families in need, employment services, addiction recovery support emergency services, rural chaplaincy, aged care and telephone counselling.”

To give to the Red Shield Appeal or to volunteer to be a doorknock collector, call 13 SALVOS, visit salvos.org.au, donate at any Westpac branch, or post your cheque to PO Box 9888 in your capital city.
