It’s really annoying how just living in your home can be expensive. And I don’t just mean having to pay the heating bill and doing the shopping. I mean, the everyday little things that cause the whole place to start looking run down and shabby. That’s why I think it’s worth taking a little time to invest in protecting your home from the periodic damage it suffers. Check out some of our ideas below.
Check Your Appliances
Nothing is more annoying than a perfectly good fridge packing up just as you’ve arrived home with the week’s shopping. That’s why it’s always best to prevent problems from occurring in the first place. Make sure you pull out the fridge every once in awhile and vacuum the coils at the back. These are a magnet for dirt and grime and, if not regularly cleaned, can put an unnecessary strain on the fridge’s compressor. It’s really annoying how just living in your home can be expensive. Sweep Your Chimney
If you’re lucky enough to have a chimney, and you use a fireplace often, it’s a good idea to have your chimney swept every year. This isn’t so much about saving money as it is about preserving your health. Your chimneys need to be swept regularly to prevent a buildup of carbon monoxide in your environment.

Don’t wait until your carpet wears through. Put down chair mats for carpet and limit the damage.
Inspect Your Washing Machine And Dryer
One of the top reasons for home insurance claims is damage caused by a leaky supply hose for a washing machine. Make sure the supply lines are free from damage annually and consider having them replaced every three years or so.
You also want to make sure that the drain lines are properly tightened at the back of your appliance. Loose lines can come out and cause damage to the rest of your property.
Don’t forget that your dryer is also a fire hazard because of the lint filter at the back. This should be regularly cleaned out to prevent an expensive and potentially dangerous accident.
Check Your Gutters
Gutters are often overlooked, but they’re essential for keeping your foundations in good health. Gutters capture all the debris that falls onto the roof, as well as rainwater and makes sure it doesn’t run down towards the foundations.
One of the leading causes of damp and flooding on the ground floor and in the basement is improperly maintained gutters. As you might imagine, sorting out damp in a basement is a far more costly exercise than getting up on a ladder and scooping out leaves from a gutter. Of course, if you’re not confident in doing this yourself, you can always somebody else to do it for you. Either way, you win.
