It’s well recognised that moving house can be one of the most stressful events in a person’s life, but a quick read of the tips below can significantly ease the pain of moving.

Planning

You should start thinking about the logistics of moving house even before you sell the house that you’re currently living in, because once the contracts are signed, the deadline for moving is going to bear down on you like a raging bull. Things to think about include the distance from your old house to your new house, considerations about particularly large pieces of furniture, and whether you’re going to move yourself or get someone in to do it for you.

Culling

It’s a simple fact that the less stuff that you have to move, the easier moving house will be. Take stock of the entire contents of your house and get a list together; do you really want to move that hideous antique table that you’ve got sitting in the garage? Do you really need the 15 garbage bags (currently full of clothes that you never really wear any more) that are sitting in the attic? Be ruthless. Hold a garage sale. Donate to charity shops. You can even hold a ‘free stuff giveaway’ party so that all your friends and family can come around and help reduce the amount of stuff that you’ll actually have to move.

Essentials

One of the greatest pains of moving house revolves around the fact that when you get to your new house, you discover that your entire life is now in boxes and you can’t find anything that you may need urgently. Before moving, get a packing box and write ESSENTIALS in big red letters on every side of the carton. This will be your ‘one stop shop’ for everything that you’ll need in the first few days of living in your new house. The kettle, tea-bags, sugar and coffee should go in here, as should some vital cooking utensils because there’s nothing worse than sitting on the floor, surrounded by a million boxes, while you ponder which one holds the frying pans. A folder with all important documents should go in the ESSENTIALS box too.

Assistance

You can ask friends and family to help at all points of your move – and there’s no shame in asking for assistance, especially when you’re moving house. Best buddies can help with packing, and if you have family, rope them into the cause too. Babysitters are essential if you have children. Always remember the old saying: ‘if you don’t ask, you don’t get’ so be happy, don’t stress and enjoy the process. An experienced removal company such as Your Local Movers can also provide you with a huge amount of helpful information – and coupled with their years of experience, you can rest assured that your treasured possessions will be in safe hands
