Tips for returning to work after an injury

Returning to work after an injury can be daunting and ultimately quite difficult. If your injury is still lingering, it is possible that your previous work site is no longer suitable. Below are some tips for returning to work after an injury.

Talk to your physician

After an injury, speak with your physician constantly. It is important for you to know the extent of your injury and the consequences. Ask valuable questions. Is it possible for you to stay at work following your injury? Are you able to work during your rehabilitation? How long will you be out of work? The sooner you can return to work, the quicker it means that you can return to your normal life. The longer your absence from work, the more likely it is that you will not return. Keeping up a constant dialogue with your physician will help you to establish a timeline.

Talk to your employer

Whatever you discuss with your physician, you must then communicate to your employer. Upon your return to work, your employer is the one who must alter your work site, reduce your hours spent working, and tasking you to lighter, more suitable duties. Tell your employer what your physician has suggested in terms of returning to work. If it is likely that you will be out of work for a longer period of time, discuss options with your employer about your return to work in the future. Your employer should provide you with options about a suitable duties plan, which allows you to remain at work in a different capacity. Communication is key when it comes to your employer.

Returning to work following an injury is an important step in your recovery. It can help you to maintain your lifestyle without limited impact on your finances and family. By following the tips above, you can communicate effectively to your doctor, and employer, while still getting yourself back to your pre-injured state.
