With so many dime-a-dozen TV characters on our screens, it can be a challenge actually differentiating between them, let alone noticing those with ‘style’. But style isn’t just about fashion – it’s about personality. With this in mind, there are indeed a few characters who scream, ‘look at me’, without even trying, and that’s why we love them. Some characters still stand out in our minds, even if their program is no longer in production. So let’s observe five standouts from past and present.
1. Veronica Mars – Veronica Mars
Even though Warner Bros. ended production of Veronica Mars years ago, its title character is still remembered and much talked about. The girl is smart. She’s independent, funny and perpetually an underdog, but never gives in to peer pressure. She’s a rape survivor, doing whatever she can to hunt her attacker down and make him pay. She’s tenacious in seeking justice for everyone, hence her determination in finding another serial rapist later in the series after she’s already found hers. Veronica Mars is a role model! So much so, that the Veronica Mars movie was released earlier this year thanks to the contributions from a Kickstarter campaign. 2. Hannah Horvath – GirlsThe protagonist on HBO series Girls, Hannah Horvath is a young woman we love to hate. But we can’t help but be captivated by her. Perhaps it’s because she’s selfish. Perhaps it’s the fact that she’s not particularly beautiful – not in the conventional sense of the word. Hannah has some redeeming qualities that make her relatable and liked, though grudgingly. She’s witty and self-aware, yet vulnerable. In other words, she’s human. And let’s face it – she reminds so many of us of well, ourselves, when we were that age. Plenty of mistakes, but plenty of opportunities to learn from them. |
3. Penny – The Big Bang Theory
A simple girl from Nebraska, Penny moved to California to become an actor. Known for being untidy and not too bright, she has more positive qualities than negative ones. She doesn’t try to impress anyone by being fashionable, opting instead for sloppy casual. She tries her best to understand Leonard and the gang as they drone on about physics, despite being reminded of her less than stellar academic history. She has a good heart and is the only one willing to sing to Sheldon when he’s sick. That’s reason enough to admire this one!
4. Spencer Hastings – Pretty Little LiarsAs the name would suggest, Spencer is one of four close-knit friends. And in any group of friends, there’s always one who’s the glue that binds everyone together. She’s an overachiever – constantly balancing school with internships and jobs, hockey and charity work. She’s quietly confident, and the only who dared to stand up to the most feared girl in school. She’s athletic, daring, and some might say bossy, but we love her because she’s intelligent and protective of her friends. |
5. Olivia Pope – Scandal
Olivia is the kind of woman we wish could be. A ‘fixer’, after having a high-powered position in the White House, she’s intelligent, bold, life-savvy. Her experience comes from who knows where, and nothing fazes her. She has the ability to assess a situation and come up with the right solution then and there. However, she has an Achilles heel, like everyone else. Hers just happens to be the President of the United States.
TV land is full of characters whose style we love. And each one is so varied to the other. We love, or love to hate, and these characters are perhaps our vehicles for vicarious living. They may be fictional but they’re real enough to resonate within us.
