warehouseHave you heard the expression a ‘tidy desk, tidy mind’? Well, there is definitely some truth to it, especially when it comes to levels of productivity in the workplace, which will also affect business profitability. Having an organised work space – whether it’s a desk or a warehouse – will help clear thoughts to focus on other important aspects of the business, such as productivity levels and business operations.

By improving both of these aspects, you will in turn help the profitability of your business too. For example, when it comes to warehouses, it may feel a difficult task to maintain an organised system. All too often, items are despatched with haste with the thought of organising at a later date, but it’s vital to business profitability to find the right storage solutions for your warehouse needs.

If you spend the time investing in a viable storage solution for your warehouse, it could make all the difference to how you operate as a business and make way for clarity on improving processes and overall services.

Why storage solutions matter

Whatever products you store in your warehouse, whether it’s wholesale goods or old files, getting organised will make better use of both time and space. Consider the fact that if you enter a disorganised space looking for a particular item, you may spend a far longer time searching through the areas trying to locate it. This of course is valuable time that could be spent elsewhere, carrying out meaningful business tasks or closing deals. Making a better use of time will naturally impact on productivity levels, as more time will be spent focused on actual tasks, rather than hopelessly looking for a ‘needle in a haystack’.

If too much time is lost on locating specific items, it will have a knock-on effect to other areas of your business such as customer service. To make a company as profitable as possible, you always need to keep your customer service levels in mind and ensure they are getting the best level of service you can offer, every time. Further to this, by having an organised and categorised storage system in place, you will make for a better working environment. This in turn will boost staff morale, improve pride in the workplace and make it a better and more motivated place to be. Of course, a motivated and proud workforce, will make for a more productive and profitable business too.

Having a tidy warehouse actually makes for a more effective use of space, which is vital whether you rent warehouses or if you are the owner. You may find the space is filled a lot quicker if it’s disorganised, meaning you require more space, more often. By taking the time to organise and correctly allocate stock, you will be maximising the storage space used, reducing the need for additional storage space sooner. By installing appropriate shelving and storage units to keep everything neat and tidy, you could save your organisation valuable money in the long run. There will be less need to expand on storage, which means lower overheads and more profitability overall.

How to make the change

Naturally, it will take some time to install an organised system into an existing warehouse, but you will definitely reap the benefits to your business in the long run. This is true from both a staff morale perspective, as well as productivity and profit levels too. No business can realistically operate in disorganised surroundings for a sustainable period of time without it affecting profits, so act now and get a system in place that works for your staff, your customers and ultimately, your business.
