looking through windowWhen you feel that your life purpose is to be a mum, there comes a time when that is no longer the main focus in your life. The kids have grown up and left home. While you will always be a mum, the time has come to put yourself first. To do what you want and fulfill yourself in new and exciting ways.

But what do you want? What is your new life purpose?

I was fortunate to be able to be a full-time mum. We struggled to make that happen and sacrificed a lot, but to us, it was what we wanted for our children. Even when I started a business, it was at home, so that I could work around my children’s schedule. I was there for them right through their schooling years.

While this was wonderful, it took a lot of adjusting in my life and some time to really start looking at my own needs. What was I to do now? What was my new life purpose? Being a full-time mum also meant that I was fully dependent. I had no income of my own. My needs and wants always came last. After being in this lifestyle for 20 years, these patterns have been very difficult to shift. I still find 10 years later that I have to pull myself out of these patterns sometimes.

In my experience, there are 3 things you will need to go from full-time mum to being a successful business woman.

Clarity, Courage and Community.

Clarity
You need to be very clear about what it is you want to create in your business and your life. Understanding your new life purpose is a great help here and there are tools that can help with this. However, to get some direction, spend some time in meditation. Make a list of all the things you are good at, that you enjoy; the things that come easy to you. Write down all your inner most desires. Journal about the life you want to create for yourself. Once you have done that look over the lists for similarities. What really excites you? Mix and match different ideas and skills until you have the clarity you are seeking.

Courage
To be successful you have to be bold and courageous. Get yourself out of that safe little cocoon you have spent years creating. Your fledglings have flown the nest. Now it is your turn to fly and soar. Have courage to move beyond, all of the patterns you have set up for yourself. Move beyond the narrow image and outlooks you have. Remember what you told your children. “You can do anything if you set your mind to it” The same goes for you, plus you have the maturity and wisdom behind you. You are free to be everything you ever imagined you could be.

Community
As much as your family and friends love you, the you they know and support is the “mum”. They may not understand your need and desire to create a new you. What you need now is a community of women who are out there doing what you want to do. Get out there and make new friends, join new groups of successful, positive women who will inspire you to be the best you possible can. Find people who will applaud your every step and encourage you when things are tough. You may also find it helpful to find a coach who will stand by you, guide you and help you to bring out your full potential. You’ll have someone to hold your hand, be accountable to and propel you forward much quicker than you would alone. Choose one who is right for you. Someone who has been through what you are going through and that you resonate with.

So, if you have a dream to create a new lifestyle for yourself that offers you independence and freedom, go for it. Get your ideas out of your head and make it happen. Get started on your business ideas and look forward to the day you can have your business and the freedom to spend time with grandchildren.
