Tips to Declutter Before A MoveThere’s no better time to declutter your home than before a move. Getting rid of all the items that you’ve hardly ever used, but have been hoarding for years, can be a cathartic experience. Moving to a new location is the start of a new chapter in your life. Don’t take all your junk along with you on the journey. Get rid of all the nonessential items & begin your journey on a positive, clutter-free note.

Getting rid of junk will not only give you more space in your new house or office, you will also cut down on the number of items to be moved. Here are the top 3 tips to declutter your home before a move.

1. Get Rid of Unused Items

That air fryer was on sale & you got it for a steal. Great. But what’s the point of having it in the pantry, unused? Sure, you’ve been meaning to take it out & use it, but you just haven’t gotten around to it. And chances are that, you won’t be using it after moving to your new house either. So, why not just sell it online or gift it to a friend who will actually use it? All of us have many items around the house that we hardly ever use or have need for. Look around your home or office & get rid of anything that can be termed redundant or unnecessary.

If you hoard clothes, either hoping that the style comes back in fashion or hoping that you will lose enough weight to fit into the garment again, it’s time to let go. If you haven’t used it in over a year, then it’s safe to say that you won’t miss it when it’s gone. Think about it this way, if you donate your clothes, at least someone will be wearing it. That’s better than having the clothes in storage eternally.

2. Dispose of Broken & Old Items

Moving is the perfect time to say goodbye to broken or old items & replace them with new ones. If you’ve been planning to get an item repaired (such as a copy machine), do it at once. Give yourself a deadline to have any broken items around the house or office fixed. Failure to have them fixed in time should be taken as a sign that it’s time to get rid of that item.

3. Get Rid of Obsolete Paperwork

If you’re moving office, then it’s time to go through all the paperwork that you’ve accumulated over the years. You’ll be surprised at how much space outdated paperwork take up. Invest time to go through paperwork, sort & organise them into important documents & obsolete paperwork to be shredded. Another tip is to consider making digital copies of some of the paperwork, so you don’t have to hold on to the hard copies.

Clutter can make a space feel chaotic & unorganised. While planning to move, take some time to segregate items into three categories: essential, dispensable & nonessential. This will help you decide which items you need & which ones to get rid of.
