The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has started developing a national standard for the fax marketing industry with the release of a discussion paper.
ACMA Chairman Chris Chapman said, “The standard will form an important part of the Do Not Call Register scheme, which was recently expanded to allow fax numbers to be listed on the register.”
“The development of a national fax marketing industry standard is intended to provide the community with greater certainty regarding the minimum level of behaviour they can expect from fax marketers. It is also intended to encourage best practice in fax marketing,” he said.
The ACMA is seeking input from the fax marketing industry on the minimum standards of conduct. These include the days and times marketing faxes may be sent, as well as any information marketers would be obliged to divulge about themselves and the organisations they represent.
The ACMA is inviting comments from consumers and industry about the development of the industry standard by close of business, Monday 9 August 2010.
The ACMA’s discussion paper Developing an Industry Standard for the Fax Marketing Industry is available on the ACMA website.
The ACMA will be holding information forums for members of the fax marketing industry in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria during July. For more information or to reserve a place at one of these sessions, please contact Mellanie Shaylor on (03) 9663 6867 or mellanie.shaylor@acma.gov.au.
